Books like Among the missing by Morag Joss

Set in the quiet Scottish town of Invermuir, the sudden collapse of a commuter bridge sends shockwaves through the community. The bridge’s camera captures a vehicle—intended to carry Annabel—just before it falls into the river. Unbeknownst to many, Annabel had sold her car to Stephen, an immigrant striving to give his daughter Anna and his wife Silva a chance at a better life by using it as a taxi. After the tragedy, Silva waits along the riverbank for her husband, whose car went down. There, she discovers Annabel, who is pregnant and presumed dead. The two women create an uneasy alliance, sharing living space, chores, and a mutual need to conceal their pasts. Ron, an ex‑convict seeking redemption, joins them, working to transport people across the river while the bridge is rebuilt. However, buried secrets cannot remain hidden. Lies, betrayals, and unresolved histories surface, threatening the fragile harmony of the trio. For Annabel and Silva, the impending revelations bring tragic consequences as their pasts catch up with them and the quiet town is shaken by their turmoil.
