Books like The Sunita experiment by Mitali Perkins

When her grandparents arrive from India for a visit in California, thirteen‑year‑old Sunita is forced to confront the gaps between her Indian heritage and the life she knows in the United States. Her feelings of resentment and embarrassment sprawl across her friendships and family life. As the story unfolds, Sunita navigates the complexities of cultural identity, family bonds, and friendship, seeking a place where she can belong. The narrative centers on the everyday moments of a family that bridges continents, revealing how generational and cultural differences shape the experiences of young adolescents. Through Sunita’s perspective, readers explore themes of belonging, identity, and the meaning of family. In a setting that blends California streets with the warmth of Indian traditions, Sunita’s journey offers a sensitive portrayal of East Indian American life, the ebb and flow of family ties, and the bittersweet process of growing up with a multicultural backdrop.
