Books like Tragedy of Hyderabad by Mir Laik Ali

*Tragedy of Hyderabad* offers a historical perspective on the period immediately following India’s independence, when the princely state of Hyderabad chose to remain independent. The text outlines the ensuing conflict, including India’s military blockade and subsequent annexation of the city-state. It examines the impact of these events on Hyderabad’s composite Hindu‑Muslim culture and discusses the broader political context, referencing the decision not to hold a referendum and the perceived aggression against the people’s wishes. The book presents itself as an authentic, first‑hand view of the events surrounding the Nizam and the government’s actions, drawing on contemporary accounts to argue for a nuanced understanding of the period. The narrative highlights the uniqueness of Hyderabad’s governance under the Nizam, noted for its secularism and prosperity, and contrasts it with the later violence and cultural disintegration that followed the annexation.
