The students of Starhurst are excited about Mrs. Crandall's plans to purchase a piece of property at Moon Lake for a girls' camp. Five girls, including Louise and Jean Dana, join Mrs. Crandall on a weekend outing to the proposed site. Much to the Danas' dismay, Lettie Briggs comes along too. When they arrive, they find that the house on the property appears to be haunted. Someone is in the locked attic room and only comes out at night. The girls convince Mrs. Crandall to stay and investigate. The girls try to prove that the property is not dangerous so that Mrs. Crandall will purchase it for the school.
