Books like Camp Zero by Michelle Min Sterling

By 2049 North America has been scorched by extreme heat, and the oil industry that once powered the continent has collapsed. The wealthy have retreated to a floating city—an artificial island—where they live in comfort, while the wider population fights for survival on the mainland. Rose, hired as a hostess in a private club on the floating city, sees a chance for a brighter future. Meanwhile, at the Cold‑War‑era research station Blanche Alice, highly trained fighters and scientists conduct climate surveillance missions whose directives grow increasingly baffling. Near the Canadian Arctic, the construction of Camp Zero marks a tentative step toward a new way of living in a climate still habitable. For Grant, a disgraced exiled literature professor, the camp offers an opportunity to atone for his family’s past. Each character pursues personal goals, raising questions of trust and whether love might be the most radical choice. The novel cautions readers about the world we build and the path we must still chart.
