Books like Reading with Patrick by Michelle Kuo

Michelle Kuo arrived in Helena, Arkansas, as a Teach for America volunteer in 2004, eager to transform her students. In a county among the poorest in America, she meets Patrick Browning, a fifteen‑year‑old eighth grader whose potential she cultivates through rigorous study and a shared love of books. Two years later, when Patrick is arrested for murder, Kuo returns to Helena and resumes their partnership from the confines of a state prison. Over seven months they explore works by Frederick Douglass, James Baldwin, Marilynne Robinson, W. S. Merwin, and others, using literature to illuminate issues of race, discrimination, and justice. "Reading with Patrick" chronicles this unlikely friendship, the teacher‑student bond, and the broader cultural questions that arise when literature intersects with the criminal justice system. The memoir offers a thoughtful, grounded look at education, race relations, and the power of reading to connect human experience across dramatic circumstances.
