Books like The road home by Michael Thomas Ford

When a car accident leaves forty‑year‑old Burke Crenshaw in need of temporary, full‑time care, he goes back to the Vermont home of his youth for recovery. There he rekindles a bond with the twenty‑year‑old son of his high school best friend, which draws him into the community he had left behind. While exploring local history, he finds a series of letters written by a Civil War soldier to his fiancé. With the help of librarian Sam Guffrey, Burke begins researching a 125‑year‑old mystery that seems to reach into the present day. The deeper he goes, the more he is forced to confront what kind of man he has become: the choices he made, the decisions he avoided, his ideas of what it takes to be a successful gay man, his feelings about his mother’s death, and the suppressed tension that simmers between him and his father.
