Books like Victorian Ghost Stories by Michael Cox

The collection traces the development of the Victorian ghost story from 1850 through the early twentieth century, drawing on key texts by J. S. Le Fanu, M. R. James, Algernon Blackwood, and Charles Dickens, among others. It brings together the voices of prominent women writers such as Elizabeth Gaskell, Rhoda Broughton, and E. Nesbit, highlighting their significant but often under‑recognized contributions to supernatural fiction. With an informational introduction, detailed source notes, and an extensive survey of early ghost‑story collections, the anthology offers readers both familiar and rare tales that capture the era’s fascination with death, the unknown, and the possibility of hauntings. Twenty‑five of the stories explore haunted houses and vengeful spirits, while the remaining ten present spectral warnings and invisible antagonists, all designed to evoke the "pleasurable shudder" characteristic of classic Victorian ghost narratives.
