Books like Brightly Burning (Valdemar (Chronological) #18) by Mercedes Lackey
"Brightly Burning" brings readers back to Mercedes Lackey’s Valdemar world and charts a rarely told chapter of King Theran’s reign. The novel follows sixteen‑year‑old Lavan Firestorm—later called simply Laven—whose rare gift of fire is both a blessing and a curse. When family duties relocate him from his peaceful rural upbringing to the bustling capital of Haven, Lavan struggles to find his place. He enrolls in a special school designed to let students choose their own trade, but the harsh treatment he endures there forces his latent fire power to awaken. With the support of a unique herald, an empathetic healer, and a loyal companion, Laven learns to control his flames. As Valdemar faces an invasion by the kingdom of Karse, he is called to the front lines, where his command of fire and steadfast courage earn him the name Firestorm and cement his status as one of Valdemar’s most renowned heralds.
