Books like Lucky girl by Mei-Ling Hopgood

In this true‑story memoir, Mei‑Ling Hopgood recounts the day her Taiwanese birth parents, after more than 20 years, reached out to her from Taiwan. Arriving in Michigan as a baby in 1974, she grew up with her adoptive parents and three brothers in a comfortable, all‑American environment. Despite her detached feelings toward her Asian roots, the unexpected phone calls, faxes, and letters—written in a language she did not understand—compelled her to return to Taiwan. There she experienced a boisterous and complex middle‑class family that, in contrast to her expectations of rural poverty, welcomed her with love and humor. As she spent time with her sisters and parents, Mei‑Ling unraveled the family’s hidden history and confronted the secrets that had long haunted them. Her journey across continents and cultures explores themes of belonging, identity, and the profound ties that bind families together.
