Books like The spiritualist by Megan Chance

In the chill of a January morning in 1856, Evelyn "Evie" Atherton’s husband is found dead after attending an exclusive seance. Relocated into New York society, Evie becomes an instant suspect as the crime scene deepens into the city’s hidden occult world. Ostracized and desperate, she teams up with a Manhattan lawyer who will take her case, and together they track the suspect’s last movements. Their investigation leads to the charismatic medium Michel Jourdain, a spirited charlatan who may hold the key to Evie’s exoneration. Navigating seductive, hypnotic realms where clues emerge from the voices of the dead, Evie confronts betrayal, danger, and her own past ghosts. With powerful in‑laws mounting a case against her and time running out, she must decide whom to trust in order to survive the perilous game of predator and pawn she has become. Set against the backdrop of 19th‑century New York society, the novel weaves mystery, crime, and spiritualist intrigue to explore themes of truth, deception, and the cost of ambition.
