James Joyce's disillusion with the publication of Dubliners in 1914 was the result of ten years battling with publishers, resisting their demands to remove swear words, real place names and much else, including two entire stories. Bunyan's allegory uses the everyday world of common experience as a metaphor for the spiritual journey of the soul toward God. Twain wrote multiple versions of the story; each involves a supernatural character called "Satan" or "No. 44". All the versions remained unfinished (with the exception of the last one, No. 44, *the Mysterious Stranger).*
