Books like Persepolis. The Story of a Childhood by Marjane Satrapi

Marjane Satrapi’s *Persepolis* chronicles her formative years in Tehran during the turbulent years of the Iranian Revolution and the Iran‑Iraq war. Presented through stark black‑and‑white panels, the memoir blends humor, sorrow, and political insight, offering a child’s perspective on the overthrow of the Shah, the rise of the Islamic Republic, and the harsh realities of war. Satrapi, the only child of committed Marxists and a great‑granddaughter of a former Iranian emperor, narrates her experiences with honesty and wit. The work explores the tensions between private family life and the public demands of a new regime, while highlighting everyday life under war and repression. It is both a personal coming‑of‑age story and a broader commentary on the human consequences of conflict and authoritarian rule, inviting readers to laugh, cry, and reflect on resilience in absurd circumstances.
