Books like Little Nothing by Marisa Silver

Set at the turn of the twentieth century in an unnamed rural nation, the novel follows Pavla, born a dwarf to peasant parents. Expectation, superstition, and the cruel intervention of a local charlatan plunge her family into community scorn and persecution. Over the years, Pavla remains still while her environment shifts toward modern industry, and the novel traces her transformation both physical and psychological. As she endures cruelty, she becomes a hunted woman whose fate hinges on a profound transfiguration. A parallel journey follows Danilo, a young man captivated by Pavla, whose obsession to protect her drives the story forward. Silver blends allegory, subversive fairy‑tale elements, and a critique of shifting societal norms to create a vivid, page‑turning narrative of love, survival, and identity.
