Books like Death of an addict by Marion Chesney

Tommy Jarret, a former heroin addict from Strathbane, appears to have turned his life around after radical recovery work and a membership in a local New‑Age group called the Church of the Rising Sun. His unexpected death by overdose leaves Hamish Macbeth, the village police officer, perplexed and suspicious. Macbeth investigates the church, posing as a homeless volunteer to learn its motives, and finds that it promotes the idea that all troubles stem from sexual oppression. As separate investigators look into drug infiltration in the Highlands, Macbeth is tasked by Detective Inspector Olivia Chater to disguise himself and a partner as high‑profile drug barons, travelling to Amsterdam to uncover a smuggling operation that proves more ordinary than it appears. The story follows Macbeth’s field work in uncovering the truth behind the overdose and the drug ring while navigating personal and investigative challenges.
