Books like The Last Quest of Gilgamesh (Epic of Gilgamesh) by Ludmilla Zeman

An ancient Sumerian epic, rendered in English by N. K. Sandars, follows Gilgamesh, king of Uruk, on quests for immortality, his friendship with Enkidu, encounters with gods and monsters, and a flood legend paralleling Noah.

In his final quest, Gilgamesh, still mourning the death of his dear friend Enkidu, sets out to find the key to immortality. His journey is perilous. He must fight ferocious serpents and wild lions. He travels through bitterly cold caves, across scorching deserts, and over the fatal waters of the Sea of Death. Finally he arrives at the palace of Utnapishtim, the only human who knows the secret of immortality. Utnapishtim sets Gilgamesh a test to stay away for six days and seven nights, but Gilgamesh fails. His last hope, a flower of eternal youth, is eaten by the goddess Ishtar, who exacts her revenge. Finally, Enkidu comes from the underworld to show Gilgamesh true immortality: the king will be remembered for his good deeds, courage, and love for his people.

An illustrated retelling of the ancient epic, portraying Gilgamesh as a lonely half-god who turns tyrannical; the humble Enkidu is sent to earth, befriended by Shamhat, and teaches Gilgamesh humanity through friendship.

A story of friendship, love, and survival in war-torn Soviet Armenia, featuring the ancient epic of Gilgamesh and a young Australian family's extraordinary journey across continents and timeframes.

"The Epic of Gilgamesh is the world's oldest epic masterpiece. More than a thousand years before Homer or the Bible, Mesopotamian poets sang of the hero-king Gilgamesh, who sought to crown his superhuman exploits by finding eternal life. This Norton Critical Edition presents translations by Benjamin R. Foster, Douglas Frayne, and Gary Beckman of the entire Gilgamesh narrative tradition, with some texts now in English for the first time. In addition to the eleven tablets of the great Akkadian epic, written about 1700 B.C.E., the book includes seven Sumerian poems about Gilgamesh, written before 2000 B.C.E., as well as the later Hittite version and other related sources, among them a Babylonian parody of the epic." ""Criticism" provides interpretive essays by William Moran, Thorkild Jacobsen, and Riykah Harris and concludes with a modern poetic response to the Gilgamesh epic by Hillary Major." "A Glossary of Proper Names and a Selected Bibliography are also included."--BOOK JACKET.
