Books like The Cardturner by Louis Sachar

Alton Richards faces a tough summer after junior year as his girlfriend leaves him for his best friend and he has no money or job. His parents ask him to serve as the cardturner for their very wealthy, blind great‑uncle Lester Trapp, a role that involves driving to and playing bridge with the uncle four times a week. Alton learns that being a cardturner means more than turning cards; it means watching the subtle shifts of emotion and expectation in the game. The story moves through the house of Uncle Trapp, where Alton encounters competing interests: the long‑time housekeeper, a young nurse, and the Castaneda family. Amid these relationships, Alton is drawn to Toni Castaneda, a shy and polite young woman who adds another layer of intrigue. As summer progresses, Alton struggles to understand the meanings of the game, of the people around him, and ultimately of his own place in a world changed by blindness, wealth, and family pressure. Louis Sachar uses Alton’s observations and the bridge tables to examine how we perceive others and ourselves, the difference between what we know and what we think we know, and the elusive nature of truth and reality. The novel is an invitation to reflect on hidden depths, identity, and the importance of seeing beyond the surface.
