Books like Post-Birthday World by Lionel Shriver

In Lionel Shriver’s new novel, London‑based children's book illustrator Irina McGovern enjoys a quiet, settled life with her American partner, Lawrence Trainer, a disciplined intellectual at a think‑tank. A single unexpected kiss with her old friend Ramsey Acton, a top‑rank snooker player, throws Irina’s world into upheaval. Shifting between two dramatically different futures, the story follows Irina as she navigates the consequences for her career, friendships, family and the texture of her everyday life. Each path explores what it means to choose love and the subtle costs and rewards of that decision. Through a playful parallel‑universe structure, Shriver dissects the tangled dilemmas of mate selection and the “what‑if” moments that everyone feels, offering an intimate, honest look at how a single moment can reshape an entire life.
