Books like Severance by Ling Ma
Candace Chen, a millennial office worker in Manhattan, follows a strict routine after her parents’ death. When the enigmatic Shen Fever spreads, she finds herself the sole uninfected witness to the city’s collapse.
With subways stalled and businesses shuttered, Candace records the quiet, abandoned streets as the anonymous blogger NY Ghost. Drawn into a survivalist group led by the ambitious IT technician Bob, she faces the lure of a promised sanctuary – the Facility – and the secret she carries that could be exploited by her rescuers.
Ling Ma’s Severance blends satire, social commentary, and a poignant family narrative, exploring the rituals of contemporary life, the fragility of modern routines, and the human need to connect beyond mere survival.
