Books like Dark star by Leatrice Gilbert Fountain

Frankly told by Leatrice Gilbert Fountain, this biography traces the life of silent‑era icon John Gilbert—from a difficult childhood and early hustles on the film sets to his rise as a swashbuckling leading man in classics such as "The Merry Widow," "The Big Parade," and "Love." It offers a personal view of his marriages, including to actress Leatrice Joy, and his relationship with Greta Garbo, as well as the industry pressures he faced after the transition to sound. The book considers claims of studio sabotage by Louis B. Mayer that contributed to Gilbert’s decline, while highlighting Fountain’s own memories and interviews with industry veterans. Although it includes candid details of his struggles with alcohol and health, the narrative ultimately portrays him as an earnest, beloved artist whose legacy has often been misunderstood.
