Joy lives outside Boston, working the graveyard shift at a grocery store while grappling with a cough syrup addiction that masks a painful past. When a nationwide epidemic begins with memory loss and ends in death, she discovers she is inexplicably immune. Her immunity grants her admission to a rural Kansas hospital, where she encounters strange treatments, rigid rules, and tentative bonds with other patients—including a roommate and twin boys who are digging a secret tunnel. As winter deepens, the hospital’s fragile order collapses and Joy seizes the chance to break free. She sets off on a barren cross‑country journey to Florida, believing the state holds clues to her abandoned birth mother. On the road, she meets eccentric companions, witnesses cities transformed by devastation, and confronts the haunted secrets buried in her own memory. The novel blends dystopian grit with dark humor, exploring themes of isolation, identity, and resilience in a fragmented America.
