Books like Protector by Larry Niven

*Protector* is a science‑fiction tale centered on Phssthpok the Pak, an ancient spacefaring being who has spent 32,000 years on a mission to protect and develop a group of Pak breeders displaced into the cosmos 2.5 million years ago. The narrative also follows Brennan, a Belter—native to the outer asteroid belt—whose rebellious and independent nature draws him into the search for the Pak ship. As the Belt worlds track the vessel, Brennan intends to meet it first, but his fate remains uncertain, leaving the story with a sense of mystery surrounding the ancient traveler. Set against the expansive backdrop of interstellar travel and the rugged independence of the Belter culture, *Protector* explores themes of stewardship, long‑term guardianship, and the tension between lawlessness and responsibility.
