Books like My Heart Remembers by Kim Vogel Sawyer

After a tenement fire in the early 1900s, three Irish‑immigrant children—Maelle, Mattie, and Molly—are sent via the orphan trains to Missouri for adoption. Maelle, eight at the time, desperately tries to keep her siblings together, yet each child is placed with a different family. Eight years later, she grows up in the same Massachusetts town, her memories fading but her promise remaining: to find her brother and sister. Seventeen years after the tragedy, Maelle has become a schoolteacher and has her own family, yet the longing to reunite with Mattie and Molly persists. She begins a determined quest through the Midwest and the Pacific States to track their lives, facing disbelief, changed identities, and the complex emigration networks of the era. Through Maelle’s perseverance, the story examines the enduring strength of sibling love amid the hardships of the illegal immigrant experience and the institutional forces that shaped early 20th century America.
