Books like The tie that binds by Kent Haruf

Set against the backdrop of the American High Plains in January 1977, *The Tie that Binds* follows 80‑year‑old Edith Goodnough as she confronts a murder charge amid a hospital’s cold lights and a police officer’s knock. The investigation hinges on a knife‑slitted sack of chicken feed, a milky‑eyed dog tied outside, and the brutal realities of frontier farming. Kent Haruf recounts Edith’s life through the eyes of her neighbor, Sanders Roscoe, revealing a childhood of pre‑dawn chores, a mother’s death, and a family’s battle with violence and dependence. In doing so, Haruf paints a portrait of a woman who sacrifices her own happiness in service of family, only to reclaim her freedom in a pivotal moment. The narrative explores the unforgiving ethics of rural life and the enduring resilience of the human spirit across generations of Colorado’s plains. The novel is a contemplative examination of family loyalty, the hardships of frontier existence, and the quiet, steadfast courage that defines ordinary lives on the High Plains.
