Books like The Corrections by Jonathan Franzen

The Corrections follows the Lambert family in the Midwest, spanning two generations of American life. Alfred, the stoic patriarch, is slipping into Parkinson’s‑induced dementia, while his wife Enid embodies the archetypal, yet controlling Midwestern housewife. The three adult children—Gary, an uptight banker; Chip, a former professor struggling as a screenwriter; and Denise, an ambitious restaurant executive—are each caught in their own spiral of unhappiness and professional instability, leaving little time for their parents. When Enid summons the family for one last Christmas gathering at her home, the disparate lives of five adults collide, exposing deep fractures, unspoken resentments, and the enduring questions of identity, responsibility, and connection. Franzen’s novel blends observant humor with stark realism to dissect the dynamics of a dysfunctional family against a backdrop of modern American culture. Through intimate portraits, the story explores themes of aging, illness, ambition, and the limits of parental influence, illustrating how personal choices and inherited expectations shape each generation's trajectory.
