Books like The Burning Queen by Kathryn Lasky

When Princess Mary ascends the English throne in the 16th century and becomes Queen, not even a full day passes before Rose is forced to leave Elizabeth and ordered to the new court. Mary’s coronation is coming up, and then her wedding to Prince Philip—meaning Rose will be put to work making elaborate gowns. But the religiously devout Queen’s next plan is to begin her attack on Protestants—burning them at the stake! Rose’s dad Nicholas Oliver, master spy and goldsmith for the royal court, urges her to escape back home to the 21stcentury, where Rose becomes linked to a new immigrant girl and must protect her from their middle school’s mean girls, as well as the looming threat of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. And, now relishing her newfound family, Rose is determined to rescue her father, and her best friend Franny. But Franny and her family are Protestants, and Mary’s bloody rampage is closing in. Is Rose willing to risk everything to save the very people closest to her? The adventure between past and present continues in the gripping second installment in the Tangled in Time series from Newbery Honor–winning author Kathryn Lasky, where Rose’s courage is put to the ultimate test as she strives to find her place in the world.
