Set in the winter landscapes of New York and Ontario in the 1830s, the novel follows False Face Child, a child of the Turtle People with inhuman, reflective eyes, whom the Iroquois Elders call a living talisman. He is targeted by Jumping Badger, the feared war leader of the Bear People, who brings the boy to use him as a spiritual weapon. The bear tribe soon endures visions, spurious whispers, and mysterious afflictions. A twelve‑year‑old New York girl named Wren befriends the lone child and, together with her companions, flee across the harsh winter terrain, pursued by the bitter Bear warriors. Their struggle hinges on surviving long enough to locate Rumbler’s legendary father, known as The Disowned.
