Books like The lizard cage by Karen Connelly

Teza, a Burmese singer whose protest songs once electrified the people, is now serving a twenty‑year sentence in solitary confinement, cut off from family and other prisoners. Using his intelligence, Buddhist patience and humor, he finds meaning in the endless days and keeps looking for news in the small gifts the guards allow into his cell. Despite his isolation, Teza’s presence challenges the brutal authority of the jailers and fuels a spirit of resistance. When the prison guard attempts to coerce him for personal gain, Teza befriends the guard, risking forbidden conversation, food, and the dangerous contraband of paper and pen. The novel centers on Teza’s unlikely friendship with Little Brother, a twelve‑year‑old orphan who has grown up inside the walls. Their bond illustrates the power of hope and human connection amid injustice and violence. One dreams of escape, the other finds a different kind of freedom—both are freed in surprising ways by their extraordinary friendship.
