Books like Lesbian culture by Julia Penelope

Lesbian Culture is a comprehensive anthology assembled by Julia Penelope, organized into three distinct sections: "Women Who Did Stand Alone," "We Are Not As They Say," and "New Ground." The first part presents historical excerpts such as Radclyffe Hall’s "Well of Loneliness" and recollections of butch‑femme relationships and politics of the 1950s, laying the groundwork for lesbian herstory. The second section offers cartoons by Alison Bechdel, photographs by JEB, and essays that examine class distinctions, prostitution, lesbian sexuality, and other social issues. The third section showcases forthright poetry, writings on black lesbian filmmakers, additional cartoons and photos, and interviews with women’s music pioneers such as Kay Gardner and Sue Fink, while also addressing consumerism, lesbian conferences, and politically correct food culture. Contributions from notable writers including Audre Lorde, Elsa Gidlow, Lee Lynch, Pat Parker, and Valerie Miner illustrate the breadth of underground cultural development and the growing openness and pride within the lesbian community.
