Books like Echoes in the darkness by Joseph Wambaugh

On June 25, 1989, the body of Susan Reinert, a Philadelphia area schoolteacher, was discovered inside her hatchback in a hotel parking lot near the Main Line. Her twin children disappeared before the investigation began. The case, dubbed the Main Line Murder, captured national attention and remained unsolved for seven years. In his book, veteran crime writer Joseph Wambaugh reconstructs the painful history of the crime, detailing the extensive FBI and state police inquiry, the evidence gathered, and the eventual focus on two men: Dr. Jay C. Smith, principal of Upper Merion High School during the day and alleged sadist at night, and William Bradfield, a charismatic English teacher who had frequent relationships with students, including Reinert. Wambaugh’s account follows the path from discovery to resolution, offering insight into the social impact on a respected suburban community and the investigative process that closed the case.
