Books like Ander and Santi Were Here by Jonny Garza Villa
Ander Martinez has always known the rhythm of the Santos Vista neighborhood—in the scent of pan dulce, the mingled Spanish and English of the streets, and their family's taquería that fuels Ander's muralist dream. As a gap year plans to focus on art and prepare for college, their family pushes Ander to leave the restaurant behind, sparking doubt about whether they are ready to leave everything behind. When the hot new waiter Santiago López Alvarado joins the taquería crew, a natural attraction blossoms, and Ander learns to embrace their true self through Santiago’s perspective. Together they strive to make Santos Vista and the United States feel like home, but ICE agents soon threaten that fragile sense of belonging. The story follows Ander and Santiago’s love, art, and resilience as they face a world that feels increasingly hostile.
