Books like The Fortress of Solitude by Jonathan Lethem

The Fortress of Solitude tells the story of Dylan Ebdus and Mingus Rude, two teenage boys from a Brooklyn neighborhood that is almost exclusively black. Their friendship is strained by their different racial backgrounds, yet they remain neighbors and close friends. Set against the backdrop of 1970s and 1990s America, the novel explores how everyday choices—what music to listen to, whether to talk to a classmate, or whether to share lunch money—can carry significant social, political, and racial weight. The book also examines the rise of punk subculture, the spread of crack cocaine, the loneliness of avant‑garde artists, and the vibrancy of graffiti art. Through their experiences, the narrative touches on topics such as drug abuse, gentrification, racial tension, music culture, father‑son dynamics, and the perseverance of friendship amid societal rejection. It spans the boys’ journeys from stickball games and schoolyard extortion to prison, college, and attempts at redemption.
