Books like Porius by John Cowper Powys

Set in medieval Northern Wales, Porius unfolds over eight days in October of 499 A.D. The story centers on Porius, the only child of Prince Einion of Edeyrnion, who journeys through a region under threat from Saxon invaders. King Arthur and the legendary wizard Myrddin Wyllt (Merlin) are key figures who influence the unfolding events. The novel interweaves historical detail with romance and philosophical reflection, creating a complex narrative that has earned admiration for its breadth and depth. Powys considered Porius his masterpiece, and the newly revised edition brings the complete text into print after earlier abridgement due to post‑war paper shortages. Porius offers readers a richly textured portrait of early medieval Britain, blending the personal with the political and the mystical, and showcasing Powys’s distinctive literary vision.
