Books like The song of Hiawatha by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

The Song of Hiawatha is a 19th‑century epic poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow that draws upon the oral traditions of many North American Indian tribes, with a special focus on the Ojibway people of northern Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. The narrative is rooted in the research and compilations of Henry Rowe Schoolcraft, a noted historian, pioneer explorer, and geologist who served as superintendent of Indian affairs for Michigan from 1836 to 1841. Schoolcraft gathered Ojibway folklore and legends, collaborating closely with family members of Ojibway women—Jane Johnston and O‑shau‑gus‑coday‑way‑qua—who authenticated and authenticated much of the material. Longfellow used Schoolcraft’s 1856 revision, The Myth of Hiawatha, as the foundation for his poetic rendition, weaving the collected myths into a lyrical and narrative tapestry that celebrates the cultural heritage and natural setting of the Great Lakes region.
