Books like Comedy Writing for Late-Night TV by Joe Toplyn

With over fifteen years of experience writing and producing comedy and talk shows and four Emmy awards to his name, Joe Toplyn demystifies the craft of late‑night television writing. The book breaks down the late‑night playbook into its core components—monologues, desk pieces, parodies, and sketches—and provides detailed, actionable advice for each. Readers learn the six key traits of a good monologue joke topic, six methods for generating punch lines, twelve tools to sharpen jokes, and seven types of desk pieces to master. The guide also covers the nine essential steps for writing parodies, how to secure a writing job in late night, and includes a complete sample submission packet. Beyond late‑night TV, Toplyn’s methods apply to short‑form comedy for the internet, sketch shows, magazines, reality programming, radio, advertising, and more.
