Books like Forever free by Joe Haldeman

William Mandella, a former soldier of The Forever War, finds himself on a snow‑covered planet designed as a refuge for his kind. He sustains his family through ice‑fishing and imparts physics to the next generation, yet his existence feels increasingly obsolete. The Distant Earth Collective, a group consciousness that has evolved in human society, seizes control of the planet, keeping its isolated human residents alive to preserve genetic diversity while denying them self‑determination. In a bid for freedom, Mandella rallies the independent humans to hijack a spacecraft and venture into the cosmos to rebuild society. Disaster forces the crew to abandon the vessel, returning in suspended animation twenty‑five Earth‑years later. By the time they open their eyes, the planet they once called home has advanced by centuries, presenting a radically altered landscape and new challenges for humanity's return.
