Books like Submarine by Joe Dunthorne

Oliver Tate is a dry‑witted, precocious observer of the world around him, living in the seaside town of Swansea, Wales. As a self‑designated social scientist and budding emotional explorer, he uses his imagination and a trove of pop‑psychology to uncover the tipsy truths of his parents’ marriage and to find his own place among the eclectic people who surround him. In a coming‑of‑age tale that balances humor with real‑world concerns, Oliver quests to understand his father’s quiet depression, the mystery of his classmate Jordana Bevan, and the broader challenges of growing up. The novel follows his awkward yet tender romance with Jordana, his attempts to protect his family’s fragile happiness, and his daring, half‑hearted investigations into adult life—all set against the familiar backdrop of Welsh coastal life.
