Books like If I Were You by Joan Aiken

In her last nineteenth‑century romance, Joan Aiken weaves a tale of friendship and identity at the Abbey school in Reading, an institution once attended by Jane Austen and her sister. The narrative centers on Alvey, who agrees to impersonate her unrelated schoolfriend Louisa in order to secure a refuge where she can finish a novel she has long wanted to write. The ruse quickly deepens as the family she joins—a troubled Winship clan residing in a Northumberland household—desperately needs her help. With conspiratorial assistance from Louisa’s elder sisters, Alvey becomes an integral part of the Winship family, gaining their affection and acceptance. As the deception begins to unravel, the family begs her to remain, creating a poignant conflict when Louisa returns. Aiken’s vivid portrayal immerses readers in the Regency‑period atmosphere of a large country house, echoing the English countryside she cherished from childhood visits.
