Ellie is excited when her Grandpa Melvin, a celebrated scientist in the body of a fourteen‑year‑old boy, arrives from her school and promises an extended visit. Over the course of their time together, Melvin introduces Ellie to the scientific method, explaining that doing experiments—whether they succeed or fail—teaches important lessons about curiosity, persistence, and learning from mistakes. As they explore the school’s laboratory, Ellie sees firsthand the thrill and uncertainty of science. Melvin’s presence also shows her how to cherish family moments and the complexities of aging, all while reinforcing the idea that creativity and failure are steps on the path to discovery. The book celebrates friendship, family life, and the joy of learning in middle school, reminding young readers that setbacks are simply stepping stones toward greater understanding.
