Books like Les mots by Jean-Paul Sartre

In "Les mots," Jean‑Paul Sartre reflects on his decision to distance himself from fiction and literary production, offering personal insights into his farewell to the literary world. The work coincides with his 1964 refusal of the Nobel Prize for Literature, a recognition he declined after a decade of influential philosophical writing. The book, which draws on Sartre’s autobiographical style and philosophical background, records his thoughts on the role of literature and the personal significance of his decision to abandon the genre. It also provides context for his Nobel refusal, framing his public stance on freedom, truth, and the responsibilities of writers. Overall, "Les mots" offers readers a rare glimpse into Sartre’s own voice as he articulates the reasons behind his withdrawal from fiction and his broader philosophical convictions.
