Books like Watch the wall, my darling by Jane Aiken Hodge

In the shadow of possible invasion by Napoleon, a young American woman bound by a promise to her dying father journeys to her ancestral home in England. At Tretteign Grange she encounters a stern, ailing grandfather, a featherbrained aunt, and a tall, dark‑haired cousin who might be a spy but is certainly a smuggler. As she navigates strained family ties amidst the danger of foreign threat, secrets and hidden loyalties emerge. The narrative blends historical settings of the Napoleonic era with familiar family dynamics, introducing tension through potential espionage and illicit trade. It highlights the challenges of maintaining personal commitments in the face of national peril and unveiled family bonds. Readers will follow the protagonist’s quest for reconciliation, discovering how her American perspective clashes with the tight‑knit, English traditions that bind her relatives in a period of war and uncertainty.
