Books like The Shadow of What Was Lost by James Islington

Twenty years after the war’s end, the dictatorial Augurs, once revered for their powers, are destroyed and their abilities fail. Those who survived, marked with the Gift, are bound by the Four Tenets, written into their flesh and demanding absolute obedience. Davian, a student of the Gifted, bears the burden of a conflict fought before his birth. Living under the shadow of disdain beyond the school walls, he and his peers must learn to control the Gift or face dire consequences. Davian's struggle is compounded when he discovers he can wield the Augurs’ forbidden power. His newfound ability sets in motion a chain of events: an ancient enemy, long thought defeated, begins to stir in the north, while to the west a blood‑covered man with no memory awakens in a forest, his fate intertwined with Davian’s. The stakes of control, betrayal, and survival rise as the story unfolds.
