Books like Saints astray by Jacqueline Carey

After escaping military custody, Loup and her girlfriend Pilar reinvent themselves thousands of miles away from the forgotten border town of Outpost 12—known locally as Santa Olivia. Loup’s preternatural strength, speed, and fearlessness, combined with Pilar’s skillful use of a pistol, land the pair jobs as high‑priced bodyguards for a world‑famous British rock band. Back in the United States, a Washington, D.C. investigation into the existence of Outpost 12 uncovers evidence of a military cover‑up. The key witness, former comrade Miguel, vanishes, leaving the case in jeopardy. The abandoned citizens of Santa Olivia need a champion, and Loup and Pilar face a hard choice: return to U.S. soil and risk being declared an outlaw and detained again, or stay abroad and leave the town’s residents without a voice. The novel explores themes of self‑realization, vigilante justice, and female heroism as Loup confronts her past and fights for freedom for those she once shared a life with.
