Books like The Aran Islands by J. M. Synge

In the late 1890s John M. Synge, then in his twenties and unsure of his literary path, travelled to Paris to study French literature. There he met William Butler Yeats, who persuaded Synge to abandon fin‑de‑siècle French influences, return to Ireland, and observe a society he understood. Yeats suggested the Aran Islands, remote and little written about, for Synge’s study. Synge first visited the islands in 1898, spending six weeks there and finding the experience both fruitful and decisive. He returned each summer until 1902, gathering observations that formed the basis of his book—his “first serious work”—published in 1907. The insights he gained from the Aran Islands would later underpin Synge’s celebrated plays.
