Books like Boy, Snow, Bird by Helen Oyeyemi

Set in the United States during the 1950s and 1960s, "Boy, Snow, Bird" reinterprets the classic tale of Snow White as a story of family secrets, ethnicity, and personal beauty. Boy Novak, a New York transplant, settles in a small Massachusetts town and marries a widower, becoming stepmother to his daughter, Snow Whitman. The family’s secret—that they are light‑skinned African Americans passing for white—is revealed with the birth of Boy’s daughter, Bird, a dark‑skinned child. As the familiar motifs of vanity and aesthetic obsession resurface, Boy, Snow, and Bird confront the social and personal implications of appearance and authenticity. The novel examines how race, beauty standards, and family dynamics intertwine through the lens of a familiar fairy tale, turning the familiar archetype of the wicked stepmother into a complex exploration of identity and societal pressures.
