Books like I Had a Hammer by Hank Aaron

Hank Aaron rose from a Depression‑era childhood in Mobile, Alabama, to become one of baseball’s most respected figures. Beginning his career with the Indianapolis Clowns of the Negro American League, he played a pivotal role in integrating the South Atlantic League. A talented left‑handed slugger, Aaron’s move to the Milwaukee Braves heralded an era of unprecedented success, culminating in a 1957 World Series victory and Most Valuable Player award. When the Braves relocated to Atlanta in 1965, Aaron returned to the South, facing both admiration and racial hostility. His 715th home run in 1974 shattered Babe Ruth’s long‑standing record and became widely regarded as the greatest moment in baseball history, yet it also drew over 900,000 letters, many violent and racially charged. Throughout his career, Aaron set numerous records, including total bases and RBIs, and remained the most consistent hitter in the sport. He finished his playing days with the Milwaukee Brewers before transitioning to an executive role with the Atlanta Braves, becoming the highest‑ranking African‑American official in baseball. Aaron’s autobiography offers an intimate look at a life that intersected sport, democracy, and civil rights, making it as much a historical document as it is a sporting chronicle.
