Books like Girl in disguise by Greer Macallister

Kate Warne, widowed and seeking work, persuades Allan Pinkerton that a female detective can access places and information unreachable to men. Employed by Pinkerton’s National Detective Agency, she masters lock‑picking and surveillance, but excels in disguise: as a prostitute, a wealthy matron, a spinster, a clerk, and a Southern belle. Kate applies her skills to investigate burglaries, bank robberies, embezzlement, counterfeiting, blackmail, and murder. She earns the respect of her colleagues and uses her knowledge of deception to devise a plan that protects President Lincoln from a Southern assassination plot during the Civil War. In the process, she confronts the formidable adversary Mrs. Rose Greenhow, a notorious Southern spy. The narrative blends historical context with suspenseful crime-solving to portray Warne’s pioneering role in detective history.
