Books like Flashman on the March by George MacDonald Fraser

Sir Harry Flashman, the celebrated Victorian scholar, return in the 1868 Abyssinian War, this time as a crucial operative in General Napier’s expedition. He navigates the perilous terrain of Abyssinia, working to rescue a small group of British citizens held captive by the tyrannical Emperor Theodore. Flashman’s notorious reputation for daring action sees him chosen by the British Army to conduct covert operations behind enemy lines, a task that places him in the heart of Ethiopian military and political strife. His adventures intertwine with the larger campaign aimed at freeing prisoners and securing British interests in the region. The novel explores themes of colonial military strategy, the hazards of frontier warfare, and the personal costs of service in a distant empire, all framed within the broader context of 19th‑century African geopolitics.
