Books like Notes from the dog by Gary Paulsen
Finn is a 15‑year‑old loner who lives with his father and his loyal dog Dylan. He hopes to find a summer job that doesn’t require much interaction, except with his best friend Matthew. When Johanna, a friendlier 25‑year‑old, moves in next door, she quickly becomes an equal and a companion for Finn—and Dylan, who loves her. Johanna is battling breast cancer, and her struggles bring Finn and Matthew into roles as emotional and physical caretakers. Their efforts culminate in Finn being hired to create a garden for Johanna, a task that turns comically awry but ultimately opens Finn’s eyes to his own talents for connecting with others. Through caring for Johanna and tending a garden, Finn discovers both self‑confidence and the value of community.
