Books like Columbus of Space by Garrett Putman Serviss

In 1909, renowned science writer Garrett Serviss—whose articles appeared in major American magazines—began serializing his epic space adventure *Columbus of Space* in Frank Munsey’s *All-Story* magazine. The story emerged just months after rocket pioneer Robert Goddard submitted a rejected article about nuclear propulsion, reflecting the era’s fascination with space travel. By August 1926, the tale was revived in Hugo Gernsback’s *Amazing Stories* magazine, and Serviss graced several of its early issues. Written when Venus was still imagined as a single sunlit hemisphere, the novel blends speculative science with a thrilling exploration narrative. The book offers a snapshot of early speculative astronomy, the nascent rocket science movement, and the popular press’s role in bringing space concepts to the public imagination.
